PASSIVEHAUS

When a previous client came to us with their new project of building a Passivhaus we did not need much persuading. This is exactly the kind of project we as a company want to be involved in. using new innovative products and building methods to build for the future in a more energy efficient way is a very exciting prospect that we were happy to be involved in.

We were involved right from the start in the planning with the architect HMY Architects and the Passivhaus designer.

A passive house is built to be so energy efficient without using a traditional heating system. It uses passive heat sources from the sun, household appliances and extracted air to heat the home. Any remaining heat demand comes from other heat sources such as solar panel or heat source pump.

More information on the benefits and requirements of Passivhaus standard can be found on the Passivhauss Trust website www.passivhaustrust.org

There are rigorous tests to achieve the PassivHaus standard to ensure the quality of any official Passivhaus buildings. To achieve the requirements the house needs to fulfil certain specifications such as:

The house needs to heating demands lower than 15kwh per square meter annually
A passive house needs to have primary energy demands lower than 120kwh/m2a
A passive house must pass a pressure test and the pressure must be limited to 50 Pascals with the pressure differential not exceeding 0.6 times a room’s volume per hour (n50<0.6 h-1)

We were thrilled to not only pass the pressure test but to achieve a reading of 0.32 which is outstanding.

Obviously the house has certain requirements to achieve Passive status but is also a home and as such needs to be balanced with practicality, design and personal taste. We worked with our client and architect to end up with clean modern look.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

“Nigel and his team at Rextone have done fantastic job building our home to the exacting standard required to achieve full PassivHaus certification on-time and to budget. Working with the design team at a very early stage, Nigel was able to influence key design decisions to enable practical on-site delivery to be achieved without the need for re-design or delay during the build phase. The quality of finish to the house is exceptional and is a testament to how Nigel and team worked on the build, we could not be happier with the end result. This is the second time Rextone have delivered a project for us, and in both cases we could not recommend them highly enough.”

ARCHITECT TESTIMONIAL

“Delivering a PassivHaus project requires incredibly high levels of care, accuracy and attention to detail at every stage of the design and build. We couldn’t have wished for a better contractor for the Ringmer PassivHaus. Nigel Jeffery took great care to ensure that the detail of the project was delivered in both areas you can see and elements that are built in. That accuracy and care is well represented by the performance of the structure in the air test results, which were better than we have had on any other project, PassivHaus or otherwise. All the Rexstone team were great to work with and the journey was as enjoyable as the destination.”
